The native Early Purple orchid which is a summer dormant species, growing a rosette through the winter and flowering in the early spring. It does best in slightly damp soil both in sun and shade. Ideal for a grassland situation, woodland or a rockery in a garden. It does better in an outdoor situation rather than a pot (see below).
If grown in pots it is very important to ensure regular light watering in the autumn and do not let the tuber dry out in mid winter. Also, avoid large temperature variations in mid winter.Warm winter weather and too much moisture in the pot or atmosphere will lead to winter neck rot.
Tubers are sent out potted when dormant. With this species usually from AUGUST to NOVEMBER but the amount of growth may prevent this. Full growing instructions are on the first page of this genus.
