Ophrys leochroma

Ophrys leochroma
The Ophrys tenthredinifera is one of the most beautiful species of the genus. It is a Mediterranean taxon which comes in many sub-species or varieties more or less endemic in some regions.

In this group, the subspecies leochroma newly described, corresponds to plants with large flowers that are found in southern Greece and much of the Aegean basin. This is also known as the Lion Mane Orchid.

It is a robust plant flowering usually from March to late April depending on the area. The large flowers have the typical distinct yellow border.

Its range is not accurately known because of confusion with neighboring taxa. It seems however that this subspecies is widely distributed around the Aegean basin and adjacent areas of Anatolia.

Like all the Mediterranean ophrys it should be grown in an alpine house or under some form of protection so that watering can be controlled throughout the winter. The tuber can be grown in a relatively small pot as the tuber is not large and the roots do not spread far. If grown in a terracotta pot it should be plunged into sand and the sand kept damp thoughout the growing season. This ophrys will flower in the late winter.
