Neottia ovata

Neottia ovata
Neottia ovata is the native Twayblade with its distinctive pair of oval leaves. It is a rhizomatous plant growing in a wide variety of envirnments but mainly alkaline. I have seen thousands at Aston Clinton Ragpits which is an ancient chalk pit and usually quite dry and large numbers in the limestone crevises of the Burren in wet Western Ireland. The flowers are rather inconspiquous being small, pale green and exuding nectar which attracts a wide range of insects and are numerous on the 30 cm tall stems.. It grows well in either a garden or a large pot. Plants are sent out potted when fully dormant. In this case between SEPTEMBER and MARCH.
