This is an interesting and easy growing continental species usually found in alkaline areas around the Mediterranean. Its tall flower spike is seen very early in the season. In some situations it has been known to flower before the end of the year if the temperature remains high. Like others in the genus it has a strong smell.
In the UK it is best grown in an alpine house although I know of customers who have successfully grown it outdoors on the south coast. In the alpine house it has been known to flower before the New Year rather than in March.
Plants are usually sent out potted when dormant or just growing between JULY and NOVEMBER.
