This is a continental species primarily from the south east Europe and the Middle East. It is a plant of relatively dry areas growing in a range of habitats but always in alkaline soil. It is a summer dormant species flowering to 75 cm in May.
In this country it should be grown in an alpine house to avoid winter rain. It is capable of withstanding some frost providing the soil is not too wet. it needs a good airflow around it during the winter to avoid chance of neck rot.
Mail order plants are sent out potted from JULY to NOVEMBER.
