Cypripedium calceolus

Cypripedium calceolus
This is the British and European slipper orchid that has been re-introduced into the north of England over the past 25 years. In the wild it grows in the limestone areas, mainly in shaded scrub. It has a reputation of being difficult to grow in gardens. This reputation came from the time when the majority of stock offered for sale had been dug from the wild in Europe. Today the plants offered are seed raised and most in their third flowering. They grow well in an inorganic mixture to which limestone dust has been added. The plants offered have at least four good buds. The plants are sent out to customers in the UK in two litre pots in a suitable mix which enables the purchaser to either grow the plant in the pot in a cold frame or it can be plunged in the soil in a cold shady spot. Plants are sent out from October to March whilst the plants are dormant.
