This species comes from China and Japan growing in the semi shade of evergreen woodland but is also found on sunny slopes.
In the UK it is best grown in an alpine house or cold frame rather than being planted in the garden. It tolerates a range of soil conditions but prefers soils that do not retain too much moisture. The plant will grow in a variety of composts provided they are reasonably well drained. Like all the other bletillas B formosana will grow outwards towards the edge of the pot as it develops and like the other bletillas responds well to regular feeding.
This species will be available in March and will be sent out potted.
